I often return to childhood memories and time spent in our home just steps away from the beach. Indeed, I eagerly awaited the Summer holidays to run on the seashore, to jump the waves, to dive and splash around like a little duck until my fingers shriveled and the lips turned purple.
It was great fun and it was also a chance to have some extra time with family. In the early morning, I visited the food market with Dad and when my Mom and my Aunt were in the kitchen, I used to watch them with curiosity.
Once, I was still a child in primary school when, in the kitchen, I put on my flowered apron (I loved it!) and closed the sliding doors, which separated the kitchen from the living room. It was only for the time necessary to prepare a lunch, something special to serve to my parents. They, a little amazed, a little amused, waited patiently. I knew how to cook too and it was an opportunity to let them know.
Among the most inviting dishes of the local tradition there was a chickpea soup and small octopus, which I still continue to prepare today, according to the teachings of the women of my family.
